The Benefits of Starting your Dog on a Raw Dog Food Diet

January 26, 2012 by PetFoodia

As more dog owners are realizing that most commercial dog food is not giving their dog the nutrition it requires, they are starting to transition their dogs to a raw dog food diet. The main ingredient in raw dog food is fresh uncooked meat, if your dog were to left in the wild this would be their food of choice. Dogs only eat dry, hard, and bland chunks of kibble because that is what they are given by their owners.

Raw Food Diets Keep Dogs Healthy

Our dogs rely on us for everything, if you want your dog to be healthy, happy, and live a long life then you need to provide the dog the proper diet, filled with the proper nutrients. Your dog, although domesticated, comes from a family of carnivores that include wolves, foxes, and coyotes, and they all have the same nutritional requirements. Their diet, and the diet of your dog, should consist mainly of protein, with some fruits and vegetables. There should be very little or no carbohydrates and no grains. Unfortunately, these are the main ingredients of most commercial dog foods. Even the high-cost brands that claim to be formulated for the health of your dog will have a healthy portion of grains, by-products, and fillers in the mix.

Different Types of Raw Food Diet

Raw dog food will have no grain or fillers of any type. Raw food is made of all natural ingredients that will improve your dogs health from nose to tail. If you would like to improve the health of your dog then you may want to transition them to a diet of raw food. Although your dog is designed to eat raw meat, after years of eating commercial food, you will have to switch your dog to raw food slowly. This will give your dogs digestive system and enzymes time to get used to the new diet. If you are considering switching your dog to raw food, you should consult your veterinarian in order to make a timetable for the transition.

Many people will tell you that switching to raw food is too expensive, but they may not be considering all of the facts. If you purchase raw dog food from a store, it is more expensive than commercial food. What you will find is that when your dog is on a raw  food diet it will eat less often. When your dog is receiving the proper amounts of protein it will not need as much food, this means that raw dog food will last longer than dry kibble. There are other ways to lessen the cost of raw food. The first method is to look up recipes for raw dog food on the internet and make your own dog food. There are many people that make raw meals and sell them from their home at a lower cost. You can find one of these people and purchase your dog food from them. Feeding your dog raw food will greatly improve the life and health of your dog, and when all things are considered it will not be too much more expensive than commercial dog food.
