Can Dogs Drink Coffee?

Coffee is one of the world’s most sought after and addictive foods for humans, but what about dogs? If you left coffee laying around the house, in most cases they would drink it, or even eat the beans or crushed down grinds for instant coffee. Unfortunately coffee is not good for dogs, and it should be avoided at all costs.

We all know that coffee contains a large amount of caffeine, which is bad for dogs. Caffeine in large amounts can even be fatal to dogs, depending on their size. After digesting coffee, a dog may show many symptoms, such as rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, fits, and possibly bleeding.

There have also been some cases of dogs eating coffee kcups, which can also be harmful. Since kcups are usually in boxes, should the dog eat the whole box, it may result in a very lethal result. The important thing to know is that the lethal dose of instant coffee is 73 teaspoons, and 36 teaspoons if ground coffee. Depending on your dogs weight and size, the symptoms and complications will vary.

In addition to coffee, other harmful drinks and ingredients that contain a great amount of caffeine are, tea, cocoa, chocolate, colas and energy drinks such as Red Bull. Avoid feeding any of these to your dog at all costs, along with leaving them out when you are not home, as they will sniff out and eat anything they can find.
