Tomatoes are an interesting vegetable. They seem like a fruit, as they are so moist and have that great red color. Humans love tomatoes, and it’s likely your dog would love them too, but the more important question is, are tomatoes healthy for dogs?
In short, the answer is: Yes, dogs can eat tomatoes! However, there is a lot more to tomatoes and a dog’s health than you might think.
The stems and green leaves of tomatoes are actually very poisonous to both humans and dogs. These leaves contains a substance called atropine. Green unripe tomatoes actually have a small amount of tomatine, which is also poisonous. Though the small amounts of tomatine found in green unripe tomatoes usually won’t affect humans, it can still make dogs very sick.
The bottom line is, Yes… dogs can eat tomatoes, but only nice ripe red ones, and never the stems or leaves of tomato plants!
