What Makes Hamsters Smell?
Hamsters can become very smelly creatures as their bodies emit a natural odor that assists in helping them navigate around their cage. The food in the hamster’s cage also can contribute to the smell of the hamster as food can rot and produce unwanted odors. Cleaning out the cage and especially the feces is essential to eliminating foul odors.
Getting Rid of Hamster Odor
It is important to thoroughly clean the hamster’s cage often.Changing the bedding of the hamster’s cage can help reduce the smell of hamster odors. Suggested types of beddings are Yesterday’s News, Sun Seed Fresh World Bedding, and CareFRESH Ultra. Avoid using pine or cedar chips as they have been reported to cause infections and illnesses to hamsters.
Consider buying an odor-absorbing charcoal block. These can be placed near or on top of a hamster’s cage, any place where the hamster will not be able to bite it. An odor-absorbing charcoal block helps to take away hamster odors. Innofresh is an example of an odor absorbing charcoal block which lasts up to 4 months.
Clean weekly all the utensils inside a hamster’s cage. Take out all items and wash them in a sink with warm water and mild soap, paying attention to detail of stains and residues. Change and dispose the bedding and clean the inside of the cage using a soap and hot water. With a pet-grade disinfectant safe for hamsters wipe all the items of the cage then place new beddings.
When placing food inside the cage for the hamster to eat, remember to take out any leftovers when the day ends. Spoiled food may cause fungus creating even greater unwanted smells. Be sure to wash all food utensils with hot water and soap when cleaning out the cage.
Clean the hamster’s waste corner which the hamster usually will designate after a handful of days. Take out dirty beddings and replace with a new batch after wiping the area using a paper towel.
There are also special products that you can add to the hamster’s water that will help extinguish their natural body odor. GoodBye Odor is an example of such a product in which you can add one application a day. These are made to be safe for the hamster’s digestive system and are approved and recommended by veterinarians.
