Many people think that since cats groom themselves everyday that they do not need us to groom them. This is not the case at all, while cats can groom themselves they still need our help to stay clean and healthy, this is especially true of long haired or hairless breeds. Let us look at some grooming tips that you can use for most cats.
The first tip is to make grooming a pleasant experience for you and your cat. If your cat sees grooming as fun and relaxing, it will make your job easier. Keep grooming to short sessions in the beginning, five to ten minutes at the most. As your cat becomes accustomed to the routine, you can lengthen amount of time. Make sure that you spend a lot of time caressing your cat, even when you are not grooming the cat. Get them used to being handled, rub them from head to toe, and nose to tail.
Never allow yourself to lose your temper while grooming your cat. If you have had a bad day and are in a bad mood, do not groom your cat. If you have a shorthaired cat, brush it once a week, longhaired breeds will need brushed every day. Most pets hate to take a bath, and cats are especially hard to bathe. You should give your cat a bath a couple of times a year unless they get into something sticky or smelly. It can be helpful if you have some help when giving your cat a bath.
