Does the Furminator Deshedding Tool Work?

October 22, 2011 by PetFoodia

When it comes to reducing the pain and suffering of removing unwanted excess hair for your dog or cat, the FURminator is one tool that many say is a god sent. As their web site states, “Nothing reduces shedding like Furminator deshedding tools“.

There is not rake, brush or comb that can do what the Furminator can. Since the massive growth and positive feedback from customers who are using the product, Furminator has expanded their line of products for every pet size and hair length.

The Furminator was created for use with cats and dogs of all sizes.

How does the Furminator work?

Using the same concept as a comb, but with results a comb could never accomplish, the Furminator deshedding tool reduces the amount of shedding on dogs by as much as 90%. This is done by removing the dead undercoat of fur without damaging the top coat. By helping your pet remove their unwanted loose undercoat, you are also improving their skin coat and allowing them to remove their unwanted excess hair that their bodies are trying to shed. The Furminator gently brushes the undercoat to help restore the topcoat without doing any damage, while also keeping a healthy shape for the animal.

There are plenty of reviews on the Furminator, but we hand selected a few for you to get your own opinion. If you have tried the Furminator or are a current user, please feel free to leave your own reviews in comments section below.

– Best Pet Grooming Tool

By Bestcovery.com Expert – Jul 10, 2009 – Editorial review – Bestcovery
Resembling a large safety razor, this clever tool has a wide 4-inch stainless-steel head that easily removes dead undercoat hair while smoothing out your pet’s topcoat. It has a comfortable easy-grip handle, and is a snap to use. You and your pet will like the grooming process and the end result. It’s somewhat expensive, but it does a far better job than ordinary brushes and combs.

Pros: Effective; Easy To Use; Comfortable GripI bought a couple of cheaper deshedding tools, but found that they were not much better than a regular brush when my white 100-lb. German Shepherd hit the height of shedding season. Then I bought the Furminator (for less than $40 on drugstore.com; a bargain!). I use it a couple of times a week and it makes a HUGE difference in the amount of white hair that my dog leaves behind on my dark carpets! Highly recommend this to anyone whose dog sheds!

– Best deshedding tool ever!

By Ron – Sep 1, 2010 – Full review provided by drugstore.com
Pros: Easy To Use; Easy To Clean; Effective; Gentle; Comfortable Grip; CompactWe have a 100lb Rottenweiller that has never stopped shedding in the 7 and1/2 years she has owned us. My wife and I got her under the carport and literally filled up a cat litter bucket. Every swipe brought a bunch. She actually layed down after a few minutes and we were able to do her chest and belly. I can truly say she enjoyed it.

We took the cat outside who owns the house we live in and had similar results. We bought the large model and it worked on her as well although I’m sure the smaller version would have probably done better .
I have tried other products but this is the best. – Ron Ellis

  1. Brinkley says

    October 22, 2011 at 4:22 pm

My owner uses the FURminator on me, Brinkley the Golden Retriever, and it works great! On my housemate, Suzie the Great Dane, however, it doesn’t really work well. She is the big shedder in our home but her coat is so thin that the FURminator doesn’t pull much hair off. It really helps with keeping my undercoat thinned our and makes my overall coat much healthier.
