This Thanksgiving marks the 10th anniversary of The National Dog Show, sponsored by Purina and hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. Following the iconic Macy’s Day Parade each year, The National Dog Show has become a new Thanksgiving tradition for many.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, 78.2 million dogs are owned in the USA. The National Dog Show seems like a good Thanksgiving tradition to me, since so many Americans own and cherish their dogs!
You can watch The National Dog Show Thanksgiving Day, which is this Thursday, November 24th! Watch on NBC at 12pm directly following the Macy’s Day Parade. Judges will award Best of Breed, First in Group, and Best in Show titles throughout the broadcast. The winners of each
173 registered breeds of dogs will be judged in 7 groupings. You might learn something new about your breed!
Terrier Group: Known for their determination, courage, and self-confidence
Example Terrier Breeds: Irish Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Cairn Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier
Toy Group: The toy group has been bred as companion dogs
Example Toy Breeds: Chinese Crested, Toy Poodle, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Pug
Working Group: Working dogs are powerfully built and intelligent
Example Working Breeds: Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, Siberian Husky, Akita, Saint Bernard
Sporting Group: Bred to accompany and assist game-hunting parties
Example Sporting Breeds: English Setter, Weimaraner, Cocker Spaniel, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
Hound Group: Hounds are independent hunters
Example Hound Breeds: Greyhound, American Foxhound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Dachshund
Herding Group: Animal herding is a natural instinct in these breeds
Example Herding Breeds: Shetland Sheepdog, Border Collie, Australian Cattle Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Non-Sporting Group: Breeds which don’t fall into another group are considered non-sporting
Example Non-Sporting Breeds: Poodle, Dalmation, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog
