How Do I Train My Dog?

February 7, 2012 by PetFoodia

How do I train my dog? Is it hard for you to see that the dog that you love is not behaving properly? Well, training a dog will start right inside your house hold.  As a life-long dog owner and a fan of canine species, I learned that training a dog takes patience, kindness, and persistence. The training techniques that I am going to give you are some that I have been using on all my dogs over the years. I continue to use these training tips on a daily basis because dogs, like humans, need constant reinforcement to learn new behaviors and habits.

If you string these techniques together to create one line of consistent teaching with an emphasis on positivity, you will achieve your goal on training your dog do be a tamed, well-mannered, family-friendly companion for life.

The first step in any kind of how do I train my dog teaching begins with house training. Because you don’t want your pet defecating in your house at any point, the best method I have found to keep this from happening is starting right off with crate training. Remember that dogs in the wild are den animals – and they prefer to sleep in small, enclosed places, so giving your dog its own private spot should not be considered cruelty to animals. Here is a simple yet very effective training for your dog (crate training).

Crate Training

First thing is you should have a crate for your dog and if you don’t have ,make sure you buy one or make a crate for your dog using plywood or anything you can improvise and make sure that the create is large enough for your dog or puppy to stand and turn around. Here are the steps in basic crate training:

  • First, you must have a crate and a kennel because it is the place in your house where in the basic dog training will start.
  • Second, place a used newspaper in the flooring of your crate, it will serve as absorbent against urine or fecal dropping into your floor and it is the place where your dog will regularly defecate.
  • Third, give your dog old blanket or used towel inside the kennel so he can lie down comfortably.

Knowing the age of your pet dog will define how much time they will stay in the crate. The American Animal Hospital Association states that month old dog should only stay in the kennel for an hour. Well trained adult dog can stay up to 8 hours a day, but must be supplied with enough water.

Always praise and reward your dog when they defecate outside the kennel. Consistently doing this routine of reward system will eventually lead into tamed pet dog and easy to train in the coming days. Remember that accidents do happen during the training and if it happens don’t spank your dog because it will make your dog fearful and passively hostile. All in all being kind and consistent during this training will teach your dog to have good manners and trainable for the incoming training sessions.
