From the first time you obtain a puppy, it is very important practice to give your puppy a pill. Here is a very basic and you must do this practice, deliberately put vitamin pills down to its throat even though they are actually palatable enough for your puppy to eat them. This will help you acquire the skill of giving pill to a dog, which could be very helpful in the future.
Practicing your dog to take pills will be useful because it will be acquainted to that practice that even if you start dosing your dog at early life. Here are some tips on how to administer tablets to lazy dogs.
- With the help of a willing assistant, stand in front of your dog but slightly on its left hand and see to it that the right side of the dog’s body is pressed on solid object or a wall.
- Cup the dogs muzzle using your left hand and open the jaw by pressing its lips into the canine tooth (fang) and behind the fang on each side of the dog’s mouth in the upper jaw area. The lips should cover the upper carnassials teeth (upper premolar) on each side. To do this, use your right thumb and first to second fingers on the other side, your finger will be protected from being bitten if you do it that way.
- Use your left thumb and the first and second finger to hold the tablet, still holding the dog’s muzzle by your assistant. Open the mouth widely by tipping the dogs head up and back and by pressing down on the lower incisors with the third fingers of your left hand. Pop the pill into the center of the tongue as far in the back of the mouth as you can. The dog will have no option but to swallow the pill if the tablet is put in the right place.
- Hold the mouth of your dog closed until you see the dog swallows the pill then don’t forget the basic of obedience training, always praise your dog for a job well done.
Note. The method is for the left handed (because I am a southpaw) but if you’re a right handed, use the opposite hand.
