How to Teach a Cat to Come and Respond to their Name When Called

October 9, 2012 by Jerry Andie Abuke

How to teach a cat to come is just like any other dog obedience training. Domesticated cats have innate intelligence for training, but many cats do not learn to respond to their names when called because their owner neglected or don’t bother to teach them the basic command on how to make them come.

Most cats owner never associate or combine their pets name when called during feeding time that’s why some cats becomes lazy and do not learn how to respond.

How to teach a cat to come is the very basic in cats training. Training a cat to recognize its name is the first step in cat’s obedience training, by doing this first step, the intelligence and awareness of cats are developed remarkably and this becomes the foundation of further training later on.

Is it possible for a cat to learn to come when called? Or fetch a ball? (Of course yes! Cats can learn this command and much more!) Teaching a cat to come when called and respond to its name is the first great step.

If you cannot find your cat at home, making your cat recognize its name and come when called means that there is a big possibility that she will seek and find you instead, which is very cool right? But don’t forget to give tidbits every time your cat responds to you. Associating a treat to your cats name will give a very high positive result during the entire training.

Here is the first training on how to teach a cat to come when called:

  • Make sure that you feed your cat at regular time. By doing this routine feeding, you can predict the exact time when your cat will be hungry, a factor in teaching a cat to come.
  • Next, call your cats name right before you put the cat food down. As soon as your pet appears, call it by its name four to five times then place the food down. Do this procedure every feeding time for one to two months.
  • Finally, before your cats feeding time, call your cat by its name giving a cue that it is already feeding time, in this way you can evaluate how well your cat responded to the training.
  • When your cat does come, call your cat by its name again few times and give a treat (a respond when called is a good sign for further training your cat for a more advance behavior training later on).

Try calling your cat at different times of the day from different location, once you have your cat coming to you and responds well when called; give your cat a reward. Happy training.
