How to Find Out the Breed of Dog

It is important to learn how to find out breed of dog if you are planning to get one from a dog shelter. Dog breeds require different care and they behave differently also, and having the right information can help you to choose a dog that matches your needs depending on whether you are looking for a pet or a security dog. Check out some tips that can help you to identify breed of dog.

Size

Look at the size of the dog. Different breeds have different sizes with some breeds such as Maltese, Chihuahua, Miniature, Papillon, Yorkshire terriers and Pinscher being on the small size. Large body size dogs include the Spaniel.

Type of Hair

Another tip on how to find out breed of dog is to look at its hair. If you look at dog photos in a book or a video you will realize that there are some dogs that have silky hair while others have blonde hair. The silky terrier and the Setters, for instance, have silky hair while the Cocker Spaniels have blonde hair.

Temperament

Check the temperament of the dog. Some of the questions you should ask yourself in how to find out the breed of your dog include is it friendly towards other dogs? Does it act aggressively around people or is it people friendly? The Borzois breed is famous for being friendly while Beagles are a bit curious and will play with anyone who shows interest in them. There are other breeds which are aggressive towards both people and other animals.

Facial Features

You may also want to look at the facial features of your dog. Dogs have different facial features with some having sharp pointed muzzle while other have long ears. There are still other that have floppy ears while other have pointed ones. The color of the nose is another distinguishing feature in dog breeds. A bulldog, for instance, has a flat face while a spitz has a pointed face. Setters have a narrow nose while Spaniels have long ears, long snout and large eyes.

Coarseness of the Coat

Another tip on how to find out dog breed would be to feel the coat of the dog. Dogs have varying coats with some having thick or thin coat, soft or coarse coat and short or long coat. For example, the Komondor breed has a curly and heavy coat while the Malamute breed’s coat is coarse and thick. You can also tell dog breed by checking the color of its coat. Does it have a black, white or black coat with white patches? Cocker Spaniels breed has a black or blonde coat with the larger breed having a white coat with brown patches.

While it is important to tell dog breeds apart, most people can not tell dogs part because all of them look the same to them. There are different features that you can use to tell dogs apart including size, temperament, color, coat and facial features. These tips on how to find out dog breed will come in handy when you are planning to get a new dog.
