Cat food calculator
Enter your cat's weight, age and activity level. We estimate resting energy (RER) from body weight, apply a life-stage factor, and convert to cups using your food's calorie density. For cats under 12 months, use the kitten calculator.
How to use the calculator
- Weigh your cat and enter the weight in lb or kg.
- Pick the age group and activity level that fit best.
- Enter the "kcal per cup" value from your food's label.
- Read the daily calories and cups, then check body condition with your vet.

How the formula works
First we estimate the Resting Energy Requirement (RER): the calories your cat burns at rest. RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75. Then we multiply by a life-stage factor to get the Daily Energy Requirement (DER), which accounts for activity and neuter status. Finally, DER ÷ kcal per cup gives cups per day.
Example: a 10 lb spayed/neutered adult cat
- Weight: 10 lb ÷ 2.20462 = 4.5 kg
- RER: 70 × 4.50.75 ≈ 218 kcal/day
- DER: 218 × 1.2 ≈ 262 kcal/day
- Cups: 262 ÷ 400 kcal/cup ≈ 0.66 cups/day
Example: a 10 lb adult cat with low activity
- Weight: 10 lb ÷ 2.20462 = 4.5 kg
- RER: 70 × 4.50.75 ≈ 218 kcal/day
- DER: 218 × 1 ≈ 218 kcal/day
- Cups: 218 ÷ 400 kcal/cup ≈ 0.55 cups/day
These examples are estimates only. Real needs can differ by 20–30% or more. See the methodology for details.
